Long regarded as a tournament for first-time winners, Nico Echavarría Thursday begins a quest towards history aiming to become the first ever back-to-back winner of the Puerto Rico Open. Echavarría, who last year shot a final round 68 defeated Akshay Bhatia by two strokes to take home his first PGA Tour victory, and today leads the field of 132 golfers onto the 7,506-yard Par 72 course at Grand Reserve Country Club in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico. Also in the field this week are Robert MacIntyre, Rasmus Hojgaard, Aaron Rai, Ryo Hisatsune and Justin Suh who are all ranked in the Top 100 in the Official World Golf Rankings and are aiming for their first PGA Tour wins.

Nico Echavarría turned pro in 2017 and picked up a pair of wins on the PGA Tour Latinoamerica in 2018 earning his way into the Korn Ferry Tour then gained PGA Tour status for the 2022-23 season. The win gave nine of the last 14 victories at this tournament their breakthrough wins on the PGA Tour including Tony Finau and Viktor Hovland.
Daniel Berger, a four-time winner on the PGA Tour, is in the field this week looking to make his third cut in five events this season after a top-30 finish in the WM Phoenix Open back in mid-February.
The winner of these week’s event will take home $720,000 of the $4,000,000 purse and 300 FedEx Cup points.
